The tour is designed for those who take interest in the pre-imperial Russian history. Pskov is one of the oldest Russian cities and one of the few built before the Christianization of Kievan Rus'. As Russia’s key stronghold up until Peter the Great’s conquests, the city has retained much of its formidable medieval fortress walls, dating as far back as the 13th century and telling tales of tremendous battles and numerous sieges. A vital military outpost, the city was also a center of religious center, and still boasts its majestic white churches and monasteries built by the best masons, one of them the Pskov-Caves Monastery. Pskov’s invaluable contribution to old-Russian fine arts is embodied in a the unique icons kept in the Pogankin Museum.
