Venice of the North, combined with
Peter & Paul Fortress and Shopping
St Petersburg has always been closely connected to water and and water
transportation. From the first designs of the city layout, the Neva River
and a series of man-made canals plus re-channelized rivers became integrated
into everyday life of Petersburg, with goods and cargo being transported,
water taxis and ferries, fire breaks and for flood control. Many of the grand
homes faced the canals allowing for water access by visitors and staff particularly
before the construction of the many bridges, about 600 currently, were constructed.

As
a result of this relationship with its water environment, St Petersburg was
often called "The Venice of the North" and that is what we have
named this excursion of cruising the canals and Neva River in the city center.
The city is beautiful from many points of view and one of the most interesting
is from the water. We have combined this beautiful and relaxing cruise with
a visit to the first permanent construction, Peter and Paul Fortress.
Peter and Paul Fortress has played an important role in St Petersburg's entire
history including the famous used for prison political prisoners, Peter and
Paul Cathedral with its beautiful gold spire, the space and rocket museum,
the burial site for most of the Tsars, and some of the best views of the
Palace Embankment.
The canal cruise is scheduled for about 1 hour. Cruise the canals in an open-air boat traveling the Fontanka River,
the Kryukov Canal, the Moika River and the Neva River.
During your journey pass under numerous picturesque bridges and admire
the exteriors of the many beautiful buildings in St. Petersburg. Your guide describe the history of the interesting architecture along the way, as well the points of interest. One of the favorite sights is seeing and comparing the many different unique bridges dating from the cities early day.
Plus this tour includes Souvenir and Gift Shopping opportunities in the market next to the Church on Spilled Blood.
You
will travel across the Neva River to Peter and Paul Fortress for visits
to the museums contained within its walls. The Fortress was actually a
small walled city with a mint, the first Cathedral in the new capital,
Peter and Paul Cathedral where the Romonov Tsars are buried, the infamous
Trubetskoy Bastion which was from 1872-1927 the political prison, and the
Grand Ducal burial vault, Engineers House which is a museum of everyday
life before the revolution, and other sights of interest just about anyone.
