From the very beginning of St Petersburg, drama, fine mucic
and art were integrated into the daily life of the early court and later into
that of the general population. The same holds true today. In every
catagory of performance are, the traning facilities, the level of support from
the citizens, the quality and beauty of the theater and the historical tradition
assure a continuing place at the forefront of most forms of persormance. Many
of the artists and composers who created the St Petersburg reputation are household
names who will be forever associated with the peak of creativity and talent.
If there was not support for these arts in the form of
patrons, world class theaters and conservatories possibly the city's achivements
would have been no more than other world cities but that nurturing environment
did exist and now it is hard to find a world class ballet company, opera house
or symphany hall in any major cultural center which does not have St Petersburg
trained artists, use repretare composed or created by St Petersburg composers
or choreographers, or feature styles and techiques developed in this city. As
a result of the court and public involvement with the arts, we are given a
wide range of choices in theaters remaining today, any of which would have
been the prime landmark in any other city. Here we present a little history
and information about some of the most familar theaters in St Petersburg:
