As Stockholm is built on 14 islands, it is no wonder that water has always dominated the life of the city and its residents. After departing from the port we shall head for Fjallgatan, the most famous viewpoint in Stockholm, which offers a wonderful view overlooking the Baltic Sea and a good part of the city’s surrounding island. Our tour shall continue to the charming Old Town where we’ll stroll along the extremely narrow cobblestone streets, at certain places so narrow that you may spread your arms and touch the houses on both sides. This is the point where Stockholm started over 800 years ago. Today the area is a most expensive and fashionable center for elegant boutiques and fancy restaurants and shops. We shall also see the Royal Palace and the Stockholm Cathedral-Storkyrkan, which are both located on the same island as the Old Town. While in Stockholm, nobody is allowed to miss the Jarnpojken (the Iron Boy), Stockholm’s tiniest, but most famous public sculpture. It is a tourist site where people all over the world come to spend a whole day, leaving money and gifts. On our departure from the Old Town we’ll pass through the city’s oldest street and square.
Rejoining our coach we’ll drive next through the city center with its stylish shops and crowds of people. We shall pass the Central Station, see the City Hall where the Nobel Prize festivities take place every year, and many other famous Stockholm landmarks. During this tour our guide will tell us about Stockholm today, as well as yesterday and familiarize us with the main parts of the city, its active business center and public buildings, major streets and sights.
Our next stop will be Skansen, the world’s oldest open-air museum, commonly referred to as “Sweden in miniature”. The park was founded in 1891 for the purpose of showing how people had lived and worked in different parts of Sweden in times gone by. Over the years, about 150 historic buildings have been moved here from nearly every part of Sweden. Most of them date from the 18th and 19th centuries. Especially during your visit and the entire Baltic Cruise season Skansen is the centre of daily activities for the Stockholm residents. There are endless displays of art, concerts, dances, theatrical performances, happenings, workshops, fun and shows… definitely something for everybody. Skansen is also a famous zoological park specializing mainly in Nordic fauna. – After Skansen visit return to the ship.
