This two-hour introductory tour of Oslo gives a taste of what one of Europe’s smallest capitals has to offer. Although small in population – in surface area Oslo is, however, one of the largest capitals in Europe. This is due to the fact that the city is actually 75% forest with strict regulations about building in the forested area. Within the city forests there are more than 70 lakes for bathing and 200 km. of marked hiking trails.
Accordingly the city itself has a substantial portion of green areas, with many beaches and parks, including the famous Frognerparken (Frogner Park) with the Vigeland sculptures. In the middle you will find the Akerselva (river) with 20 waterfalls, beautiful bridges, historical buildings and rich birdlife. No wonder Oslo is known as the “green” capital.
On our tour today we shall make two short photo stops at two of Oslo’s best viewpoints - Ekeberg located on a hill south-east of the Oslo harbor. This is the location where Oslo was actually founded more than 1,000 years ago. Our second stop will be near the Holmenkollen Ski Jump – Norway’s national ski sports arena, and a site of Olympic Winter Games. We shall also see the entrance of the famous Vigeland Sculpture Park.
The drive through the central part of Oslo allows you to observe that architecture in Oslo ranges from medieval to post modern. In addition we pass several magnificent buildings of national significance, among them the Royal Palace, which was built in the beginning of the 19th century with its statue of Queen Maud (daughter of Edward VII); the National Theatre, which recently celebrated its 100th birthday, and where the statues of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson (he wrote the national anthem and also received a Nobel Price in literature) and Norway's most famous writer Henrik Ibsen are placed; the Norwegian Parliament built in 1850 where 165 members of the Norwegian legislature work and debate; City Hall which is the site of the Nobel Peace Prize ceremonies, and the 13th century Akershus Fortress. Our guide will keep us both amused and informed.
