OSLO, Norway
Oslo - the Capital of Norway - is situated in the heart of Scandinavia, surrounded by magnificent scenery from the fjord to the forested hills. Oslo is today a well equipped conference city. Meetings within art, culture, science, medicine, economics and international politics show Oslo's competitiveness in this field. The center of Oslo is small and compact, and most hotels, meeting facilities, shopping areas, and entertainment are within walking distance. This city is international but intimate, and with a proximity to nature that few other capitals can provide. Walks on the main street Karl Johan enable you to feel the special atmosphere and to get to know the resident population.
Already at the turn of the 10th century a settlement was built at the end of the Oslo fjord. During the 11th century this settlement grew into the medieval city of Oslo, an important royal stronghold, ecclesiastical center and commercial center. This makes Oslo one of the oldest cities in Scandinavia, and the only Scandinavian capital with an urban settlement dating back to the Viking Ages. Many historical remnants and ruins from ancient Oslo can be found in the Memorial Park.
Oslo, Kristiania or Christiania? It’s easy to get confused studying Oslo’s past with its changing names down through history. The city’s original name was Oslo. In 1624 the city was destroyed by a catastrophic fire, and the Danish-Norwegian King Christian IV gave the order for the city to be rebuilt on the west side of the River Aker (Akerselva). The new city received the name Christiania. From 1877 the name was to be written Kristiania and in 1925 the name was definitively changed back to its original form, Oslo.
Like most old cities, Oslo has changed its character over the years as a result of fire, restoration and changing architectural styles. Much of the original city is gone forever, but in certain areas the past can still be sought out. The city has a fascinating, interesting and dramatic history. Museums and collections of international fame depicts this history, and are among the most interesting and popular sights in today's Oslo.
