ITINERARY:
Depart from the city centre for a delightful tour to Porvoo. Depending on the location of your ship’s pier you shall drive through certain parts of Helsinki, and our guide will cover and provide commentary regarding the sights on the way. The City of Porvoo originated as a trading hub for the inhabitants of the ancient Porvoo Parish at the point where the sea meets the Porvoonjoki River. The town was named after the ancient fortress Borgå, the Swedish name for Porvoo, and was granted town rights by Swedish King Magnus Eriksson in 1346. It is located about 30 miles East of Helsinki, at a driving distance of a about 45-50 minutes.
Old Porvoo is one of the cherished treasures in the national history of Finland, and the town still today looks the same as it did during the middle ages. The medieval city plan, the red ochre storage sheds on the river front, the gobble stone streets, the diminutive houses with their idyllic courtyards. The riverside storages formed a medieval harbor where salt, spices, furs, and other products were imported. Today, they have become the symbol of Porvoo, and are among the most photographed attractions in Finland.
Porvoo has also served as the stage of many historical events in the history of Finland. This is where the Porvoo Diet was convened in 1809 at the time when Finland became part of the Russian Czarist Empire.
Porvoo has traditionally attracted a host of artists who have lived and worked in the town. Finnish poet J.L Runeberg, painter Albert Edelfeldt, and sculptor Ville Vallgren have all been inspired by its unique charm.
At a certain part of our relaxed tour our guide shall invite you to a break, and you’ll enjoy a cup of coffee or tea with a local traditional pastry in one of the idyllic cafes.
Please note: A visit to the Porvoo Cathedral is subject to availability, as church services and/or private functions may be in progress. If this is the case, the Cathedral visit will not be included, but additional time will be made available to be spent at your leisure in Porvoo.
The amount of walking on this tour has been kept to a minimum , and in fact it depends on your own desire, how much you wish to explore the town. Some walking will be on uneven or cobbled stone streets.
