COPENHAGEN, Denmark
Copenhagen (Kobenhavn in Danish language) is the famous, happy, and jolly capital of Denmark It sits on two separate islands called Zealand and Amager. It is located so close to the Swedish city of Malmo, that in early 2000’s a bridge was built across the sound of Oresund, which separates these two countries, and today many people commute to work daily across this bridge, living in one country, and working in another one.
About 1000 years ago on the current location of Copenhagen there used to be a small Viking fishing port, called “Havn”, which in all the Scandinavian languages means a port. The official year of founding of Copenhagen is considered to be 1167, when the first fortification was built to protect it. From that beginning the small town of Havn developed into an important market and trading post, survived endless enemy attacks by the Germans, the Swedes, the British and others, but gradually grew to the current, modern capital of Denmark. Through all the centuries the sea, and the harbor always played an important role in the city’s growth and development.
Copenhagen is also the capital of Denmark and the home of the royal family. It is said that Copenhagen is a “gloriously royal city”. Today’s Copenhagen has something to offer to everybody. It is a big financial, commercial, and a cultural center. Many international festivals are organized there each year, the city has many well known locations and sites, which have become world famous, for instance the Little Mermaid just to mention one. Also, who hasn’t heard of the Hans Christian Andersen’s stories and fairytales?
Copenhagen has always been a popular port for cruise passengers. The city has been continuously voted to be one of the most friendly, attractive, interesting, responsive, and innovative leading port among all the world’s cruise ports.
