Tour C-3: 2008 The Vikings and the Town of RoskildeNote: This is a totally private and independent tour exclusively for you and your
party or group. Our Viking Tour will take you westward from Copenhagen, through farming countryside and small towns and villages, some of which were in deed founded by Vikings more than a thousand years ago. Upon arrival in Roskilde - which in fact until the year of 1417 used to be the former capital of Denmark – we shall visit the unique Viking Ship Museum, containing the remains of 5 Viking vessels, which all were salvaged from the bed of Roskilde Fjord, where they were sunk on purpose around the year of 1070, more than a thousand years ago. He ships were found in such a formation that it is believed that the reason for sinking them was to block the entry from the sea, and to prevent aggressive intruders gaining access to the town. The ships were discovered and salvaged in 1962. After visiting the museum, a short drive will take us to the Town Square, where we shall visit the old famous twin-spierd Roskilde Cathedral. The construction of the Cathedral was commenced during the 12th century and additions have been made through the ages, in different architectural styles. The Cathedral is the traditional burial place of Danish monarchs and contains more than 40 royal tombs. – After the cathedral we shall return to the Copenhagen port.
